While many know that Florida boasts a rich military history, many may be unaware that one of the largest forts ever constructed by the U.S. government still stands in one particular (albeit remote) location in the Sunshine State.

Fort Jefferson, located in the Dry Tortugas National Park around 70 miles west of Key West, is the largest brick masonry structure in the Americas. It covers over 16 acres and is made with approximately 16 million bricks. Among U.S. forts, only Virginia’s Fort Monroe and Rhode Island’s Fort Adams are larger. The origin of the selection of such a remote location for the fort was to protect Florida and the U.S. from threats of piracy looming in the Caribbean.
