THE “F5” (FASCINATING FACTOID FOR FANATICAL FLORIDIANS) –
This week, Ponte Vedra Beach hosts The Players Championship: one of the most significant tournaments in professional golf.
To honor Florida’s extensive golf history I went in search of a factoid regarding our state’s oldest golf course and stumbled into what I assume is a long-standing rivalry for that title. Turns out there are TWO courses purporting to be the oldest, both tracing their roots back to 1897: the West Course at Belleair Country Club near Clearwater and the Ocean Course at the Breakers in Palm Beach. Bad news for most of us weekend hackers: the former is open to members only and the latter is accessible only to members and resort guests ☹
As a Floridian and golf fanatic I’m embarrassed to admit that I was unaware of the Florida Historic Golf Trail. I’m so pleased to have come across this info and look forward to playing some of our state’s most historic tracks!
